Tidying up guru Marie Kondo under fire for her latest project

Marie Kondo's organisation and tips created a worldwide movement around the world, encouraging people to declutter and let go of things that didn't "spark joy".

The Japanese tidying up guru and Netflix star's attitude and methods for getting rid of unwanted items had people striving for a stripped-back house with only the bare essentials.

As a result her latest project has come under harsh criticism.

She unveiled her online shop earlier this week and the decision to sell homewares has been slammed because some people think it goes against her "tidying up" philosophy.

Some have pointed out that items like the Tuning Fork & Rose Quartz Crystal, which retail for $75, and the Flower Bouquet Tote, which retails for $42, are hardly home "essentials".

While people are questioning the necessity of an item like a tuning fork, it is apparently something Marie uses every day to "restore balance", according to the product description.

"Marie uses a tuning fork in her everyday life to help her to reset — and she's never without a crystal. Striking the fork against the crystal creates pure tones that help to restore a sense of balance," it reads.

There's also The Queen's Guard Candle for $86 and a Tea Scoop with a very long list of care instructions for $56.

Backlash against the online store has been swift on social media, with people pointing out the irony of Marie selling homewares items.

But Marie's website explains that "the goal of tidying up is to make room for meaningful objects" and the items on the site are a collection of the items that "spark joy" for Marie.

Opening up about the decision to start the online store she told the Wall Street Journal it was created after fans asked about the items she loved in her own home.

"What's most important to me is that you surround yourself with items that spark joy," she said.

"If the bowl that you're using currently sparks joy for you, I don't encourage replacing it at all."

While some are questioning it, you can still apply Marie's method if you're tempted to splash a bit of cash at the online store — if it "sparks joy" just buy it.
