How to ‘Hygge’ your home

Lately our judges, as well as Block architect Julian Brenchley, have been throwing around the word “hygge,” so what is it exactly?

Hygge is a Danish word meaning “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality” but in the world of interior design it’s about “creating a soft environment,” according to Block architect Julian Brenchley. “Hygge, not so much a style, in so much that it’s a feeling,” he explained to Sticks and Wombat.

After Sticks and Wombat’s lack of style was slammed by the buyers advocates, the boys are taking the hygge aesthetic in their stride and hoping to transform their hallway into a cosy and warm space.

Scotty broke the concept down into three main aspects: “Cosy, warm, cohesive.”

Here some tips and ideas on how to get the hygge look in your home.

Create warmth

Lighter colours and patterns can help soften a room and change the feel, creating a space felt lived in. The warm of the candles can give a sense of comfort.

Cohesiveness

“A space that feels like a harmonious zone,” explained judge Neale Whittaker. JJ for his cohesiveness and flow, which created a sense of community.

Cosy

Creating a cosy and inviting nature to the room can help change the feeling of the space.
