Colour can be a tricky thing to get right, especially in a bedroom.

Sure, adding a bright, punchy colour to the walls above your bed may seem like a good idea, but there are people out there who would worry that it could be jarring come sleep time.

If you're keen to step away from all-white everything and a muted palette, there are ways to bring some colour in that can spice things up.

Here are three tips for adding some bold colour to your bedroom, which is the perfect starting point if you're thinking about experimenting.

Pick one piece as your feature

Instead of thinking that you need to bring colour to every wall and piece of furniture, just go with one showstopping piece.

It could be a bright bedhead, or a standout feature wall above your bed, but picking one feature as a starting point is a great start. Then, you can balance it out with more subdued colours around it.

For example, a blue velvet bedhead is definitely a bold way to bring in colour, but instead of turning your bed into an overwhelming space, go for white linen to help bring things back.

Again, if you decide to go with a bold feature wall, try to keep the other pieces in the room relatively neutral to help create a balance. It will give you pops of colour without having turn the whole room into something bold.

Add punchy accent pieces

If you want to dip your toe into colour in a more budget friendly way, changing up soft furnishings like blankets, linen and pillows is a great place to start.

These elements are some of the easiest ones to switch out, which means you can change the look and feel of your room as easily as changing your bed linen. This winter, rich earthy tones are trending, but a bold terracotta hued linen set can help add in colour without forking out heaps on new pieces.

Adding a few new cushions is also a really budget friendly option because you can also use these as your bright accents to freshen things up. Then, layer these in front of other pillows in similar, more muted shades and you've got a lot of colour without such a big, jarring impact.

You can always add colour through fresh flowers, decorative pieces and beautiful coffee table books to help add pops of it throughout the room.

Take a chance on trends

The trending colours for this winter are rich, warm tones inspired by nature.

While both trends involve colours, they are at different ends of the spectrum and work well alongside a variety of design styles.

But there is a benefit of going with colours like earthy reds if you're thinking about embracing the trend. It has been plucked from the natural world, which means it'll never really go out of style like a neon green or bright pink might — so it is a risk worth taking.

If you do want to embrace a colour, especially if it's a trending one, think about how it will fit with the rest of your décor and what you already have. You want to make sure you're picking something that will actually be liveable and fit in seamlessly.
