How to style a grand bedhead to make a big impact

Grand bedheads were a core feature of The Block’s Guest Bedrooms this week and while some of them shone, others failed.

What learnings can you take from the Blockheads (and the judges!) to style a feature bedhead in your own space?

Consider the size of the room
Kerrie and Spence selected a stunning piece for their room, but because they were already dealing with a smaller space, the bulk of the bedhead ended up making the room feel cramped. The effect was lost completely. “This is tight,” Darren Palmer explained.

Sara and Hayden lost points for a mismatch in styles between their bedhead and plaster feature wall. “The sheen and the mottling of the velvet [on the bedhead] fights [the wall],” Shaynna Blaze noted.

“This is hot!” Darren said of the emerald green oversize bedhead Jess and Norm selected. They loved the colour and texture selected but saved their biggest compliment for its length. “I always do love bedheads that go the width past the bed and do the bedside tables. It’s absolutely gorgeous and works really, really well.” Shaynna enthused.

Allow for power

Jess and Norm copped the judge’s ire for concealing their powerpoint behind their opulent bedhead. Kerrie and Spence didn’t fare any better. “The bedhead overlaps the [light] switches,” Darren complained of their selection. Bianca and Carla, however, won the judge’s respect for ensuring they had placed powerpoints and light switches close by, but not behind the feature.

Courtney won over the judges with her high-backed bedhead but the textures and contrast of colours of the accompanying linen and pillows kicked it up another notch. She ensured she layered the pillows, using different heights and sizes to make sure the tall bedhead didn’t swamp the space, but supported it instead.
