How to make your own minimalist Christmas wreath

Nothing brings out the Christmas spirit in us like a bit of homemade holiday flare, starting with a festive wreath hanging on the front door.

But you don't need a gallon of glue and hours up your sleeve to pull off something stylish. For this year's wreath we'll be moving away from the traditional bushy green variety and creating something simpler and infinitely more chic (read: something even the DIY challenged among us can pull off with pizzazz).

1. Rustic wreath

Think Australian natives, succulents, vines and branches that can be bent and coiled into a wreath shape.

You will need:

• Wire
• Your choice of natives to add flare
• Vines or twigs that can bend into a wreath shape

2. Geometric wreath

This is minimalism at its best. This chic, brassy wreath will blend in with almost any décor, is simple to make, and still has that "wow" factor.

You will need: 

• Wire wreath frame
• Metallic gold spray paint
• Hot glue gun
• Faux or real greenery (if you opt for real, attached with other means than glue so you can discard and replace next year)
• Clear adhesive hooks

3. Baby's breath wreath

This fluffy-looking native adds a feminine touch to your festive décor, and teams perfectly with rough, woody surfaces.

You will need:

• A dried grapevine wreath to form the base, or bendable twigs/vines you can coil
• A bouquet of baby's breath
• Wire, to assemble

4. Native wreath

Why not make use of our fabulous Australian flora and earthy colour palatte by creating this multi-textured country-style wreath?

You will need:

• Wire wreath frame
• Florist's tape
• Wire
• Plenty of native flora (gum leaves, gum nuts, bottle brush are all good)

5. Fern wreath

We're not totally turning our noses up at greenery. These lush fern wreaths still look striking and are perfect for adding a pop of colour to pale walls and backgrounds.

You will need:

• A wire wreath
• Floral wire
• Fern fronds
