The idea of getting into the garden, tidying up and getting things thriving is one a lot of Australians have taken on board since social distancing and isolation started.

But it's not hard to get overwhelmed by the dozen or more fertilisers lining the shelves at the garden centre — there's so much choice — and so many chemicals.

If you're after a natural alternative, the solution could be in your pantry already.

A natural fertiliser is easier to make than you'd think and you only need four ingredients. If you don't have them on hand in your pantry already, you can pick it all upon your next trip to the shops.

The recipe will only take a few minutes to make and once you're done you'll only need to pour it on your plants once a month.

Yep, it really is that easy.

What you'll need

  • 1/2 tsp. household ammonia
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tbsp. Epsom salt
  • 3.5 litres of water
  • Bucket
  • Paint stirrer or stick
  • Watering can

Note: The ammonia is comprised of nitrogen (something plants love), while the baking soda helps prevent mildew and other fungus from growing. Epsom salt is loaded with magnesium sulfate, which will help your plants grow nice and strong.

Method

1. Pour the ammonia, baking soda, Epsom salts and water into a bucket.

2. Next, stir the mix thoroughly.

3. Transfer the liquid to a watering can.

4. Give your plants a good soak with this solution in lieu of watering once a month.
