Everyone wants to win the first-ever Room Reveal on The Block, but not every duo bag it with a risky item that turns out to be an absolute game changer in design.

For Courtney and Sev, that hero element was a homemade headboard that stunned the judges. Despite warnings from Scott Cam that there was too much going on, the Blockheads rejected his advice in a move that won them $10,000.

Sev, a commercial interior designer by trade, knew she had a showstopper for their Guest Bedroom. She decided on a headboard with marble stone capping and a ruched, velvet-style fabric draped across that she would add herself.

“I’ve done a couple in my time, so I love interesting bedheads,” she said, burning the midnight oil for hours to craft the piece long after everyone else had called it a day.

“Most contestants will be getting their bedheads delivered tomorrow, so hopefully this will be our little unique piece that will set the tone for our style,” she added.

“I think it will be a little element that no one else will have.”

While the marble took a lot of effort to create, it was more than worthwhile in the end.

The judges applauded the room for its complete originality, and even Scotty admitted: “You should never listen to me during walkarounds...”

The room exhumed a sense of quiet luxury, and also featured a curved timber ceiling panel that really drew the judges’ attention.

There was also no artwork on the walls; but with eye-catching detailing like the bedhead, that decision was praised rather than critiqued.

The room scored an impressive 26/30 overall – a landslide vote, with the runner-up raking up 20 – and the girls were elated that their risky moves and DIY game changer paid off.
