A couple have just forked out over $4 million to purchase the former cop shop in Carlton, Victoria. The new proud owners of the historic building are Melbourne locals who plan to spend another $2 million renovating the property into a home.

The sale price is undisclosed, however the agent from Jellis Craig Fitzroy confirmed it was well over the asking price of $4.18 million.

The property has two separate buildings on the premises and served as a police station for 130 years until it closed in 2010.

The historic building still has six bluestone cells which have held notorious criminals Squizzy Taylor and Jean Lee.

The agent told realestate.com.au that the buyers were still considering their options for what to do with the cells, “Whether it’s going to be somewhere to house a wine collection or something like that, I think they’re still figuring that out. They’re open to all the options possible for the remodel and renovation, with respect to heritage requirements.”
