Tools every apartment dweller should have in their repair arsenal

Combination square: It helps you to get the lines and angles straight.
Wrenches: Wrenches are a very essential tool, especially good for basic plumbing tasks, and some of them can even be used to carry out minor fixes on your car.
Safety equipment: Safety is a top priority. To avoid injuries or accidents, invest in rubber gloves, a first aid kit and safety glasses etc. Keep them in your tool box.
Tool box: Because you're in an apartment you'll want something portable. Brands like Stanley, Tactix, Grizzly and even Ikea sell small-scale tool boxes which aren't bad looking.

Add extras:
Chisels: Chisels are useful in scraping, chipping or even shaping wood, rocks etc.
