Safety fears raised over renovator's cheap kitchen splashback hack using Ikea mirror

A renovator's hack for saving hundreds on her kitchen splashback has been slammed online, after her Instagram followers noticed one glaring issue.

The DIYer, who shares renovation updates on her Instagram page @mrslhome, decided to use an Ikea mirror instead of a standard splashback in her kitchen makeover.

This bargain mirror saved her hundreds of dollars on the splashback she originally wanted to put in the kitchen.

"Ikea mirror hack – saving £578. Want a fancy splashback but don't want to spend the money? Honestly think this was such a good idea of mine!" she posted in the caption of an Instagram reel.

"We have an induction hob so wouldn't recommend if you had a gas hob! This is called the LETTAN mirror from @ikea which cost us £22."

However, Mrs L Home's followers were quick to point out the more affordable option might not actually be that safe in the long term.

"The reason it costs more than £22 to do the job properly is because; it would be heat resistant glass, would fit the space and would be safely secured. Don't try this at home!" a woman commented.

"I have a mirror behind my cooker and it is tempered to be able to withstand the heat. Putting a normal mirror behind your cooker is dangerous… don't recommend it at all," a follower added.

But it wasn't just the heat people had an issue with.

"OK, firstly, not heat resistant. Secondly, gonna have to constantly clean it, thirdly, who wants to looks at themselves cooking?!" another posted.

One critic of the hack, who has expert knowledge of splashback safety features, debunked the concerns surrounding heat, but pointed out other issues.

"I work for a splashback company, using a non-toughened mirror behind an induction hob is probably OK. However, as you rightly mentioned it is not secured correct, and it doesn't have a foil backing in the event of breakage. This is not recommended people, please do not try this at home," she posted.

The DIY hack did have plenty of fans though, including one person who has used a mirror as a splashback themselves.

"Love it. We did the same. It's been three years now and not so much as a crack," said the follower who also has an induction hob.

"What a great idea – it looks fabulous!!" another commented.

While the hack looks good, the concerns surrounding its safety are a reminder to seek advice before attempting DIY swaps in areas where safety is a big concern.
