No longer in need of the five-minute commute to the Gabba since retiring from the AFL, former Brisbane Lions defender Daniel Merrett has listed his newly-built home in Hawthorne, Queensland.

The former player commutes to Yeronga and Red Hill during the week to his consulting gigs with the AFLW and the NRL. The now lengthy commute is one of the reasons he and his wife Sarah are on the hunt for a new area to call home.

Aside from the location, the AFL legend recently told Domain, the home is too big for his young family.

"With the two levels, we only really use our top level," Merrett said. "We never really go downstairs."

Completed two years ago, 18 Dover Street still has two years remaining on the builder’s warranty — which means if anything goes wrong, the new owner has a direct line to the builder.

The home features beautiful high ceilings, glass sliding doors connecting light-filled interiors to outdoor entertaining areas, and a manicured backyard.

The property will go to auction on June 24.
