Back in the early days of the Oscars, awards were handed out to classics such as Gone With the Wind (1939) for Best Interior Decoration.

In 2016, the focus of the Best Production Design is a marker of both excellence in interiors and the overall visual aesthetic of a film set. This year’s Oscar nominees celebrate film sets from The Martian to Mad Max: Fury Road and Bridge of Spies, transporting the audience to locations such as a dystopian Wild West and Mars.

Although the Best Interior Decoration is now Academy history, if the category was around the stunning 1950s-era interiors of Carol and Brooklyn would certainly have given the elaborate set of The Danish Girl, one of this year's nominees, a run for its money.
