Tips and tricks for creating the perfect ensuite

Unlike the Blockheads, you'll hopefully have a few more days to get your head around your own ensuite renovation.

But there are some essentials to consider when planning your ensuite.

Do – Create a sanctuary for your guests or yourself. An ensuite allows the user a private space away from the extended household's shared bathroom. Allow power points and storage for grooming items like razors and hairdryers and great lighting and mirrors for beauty needs.

Don't – Make it too squishy. You want to be able to dress and groom yourself in there if possible, so don't try and include everything. It's a private bathroom, so you can leave everyday personal items on display (unlike in a main bathroom), so ensure you have bench space.

Do – Add as much light as possible. Making best use of natural light will maximise size and also help light (and fresh air where possible) conquer damp spaces. Obviously maximise any windows available and aim for frosting instead of a blind or curtain. If a window isn't an option, think about going up – consider adding a skylight to let the sunshine in. Also opt for clear shower screens to prevent light being blocked.

Don't – Skimp on towels and accessories. High-end lotions, potions and luxe bathtowels, robes and mats will instantly make you or your guests feel valued. Who wouldn't want to enjoy that kind of treatment?

Do – Mix and match showerheads. Typically, an ensuite is smaller than a master bathroom and may not allow for a bath. Including two different types of showerheads will let people with alternate showering preferences enjoy the space. For example – someone who doesn't want to get their hair wet might prefer a hand shower, while someone else might enjoy a grand, overhead shower.

Don't – Be too on trend. Opt for a timeless look for the expensive and complicated base elements like tapwear, tiles and colours. Let current trends shine through with accessories that are easy to switch in and out seasonally.

Do – Utilise the small spaces. Ensuites can be substantially smaller so make use of the room you have. Try to ensure all available areas are pulling double duty, for example using mirrors that are actually in-build cabinets and adding shelving above the toilet. Use an in-wall toilet cistern if you have the option for a sleeker, less bulky finish.

Don't - Include a double basin if you don't really need them. It's better to have a single basin and use the extra bench space for personal items and preparation, rather than having two sinks just for the sake of it.
