Innovative chandelier purifies the air

We all know the benefits of filling our homes with air-purifying plants (thanks, nature!) but now an innovative creation from London designer and biotechnologist Julian Melchiorri is set to change the game.

Melchiorri's extraordinary Exhale Chandelier not only lights up the room, but actively purifies the air around it by utilising glass leaves filled with green algae that absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.  

The living chandelier is made up of 70 algae-filled leaves based on the basic principles of photosynthesis, and are connected by nutrient-transporting tubes to a central hub concealing an LED light source.

Although the chandelier is only currently a prototype, Melchiorri, who designs radical environmental solutions for urban and industrial settings, hopes to integrate his photo-reactive cell technology into future buildings to help eradicate them of harmful emissions. Imagine!
