A night of surprises as the Blockheads let loose with their styling

It was a roller-coaster night of judging as the judges inspected some truly eclectic rooms this week.

“Strap yourselves in, it’s going to be a bumpy ride,” Scott Cam warned the Blockheads as he kicked off feedback – which wasn’t exactly a promising sign.

Spence and Kerrie: “Visually abrasive”
The pair were confident the judges would like their bold efforts this week. The judges did not. The giant wall mural of a graffiti filled laneway was an instant turn off. “It’s totally overwhelming,” Neale Whitaker said. “It’s giving me vertigo,” agreed Darren Palmer, calling the picture “visually abrasive”.

While the judges gave them credit for pushing the envelope and liked their built-in desk, they also didn’t appreciate Spence’s specially built bedhead. They labelled it a disaster, which crushed Spence who had worked hard on the unit. “They’re taking risks and those risks haven’t quite paid off,” finished Neale.

Sara and Hayden: “Absolutely stunning”
It was the week from hell for Hayden and Sara but the end result was anything but. “Isn’t this beautiful?” breathed Neale. He and Shaynna loved the wall tiles, although Darren admitted they were the only thing in the room he didn’t like. He was a huge fan of the room, calling the vanity “absolutely stunning”.

“You really do get the impression Hayden and Sara have listened,” said Neale. “It’s almost like they wrote down a little list of all the touch points that we have talked over the weeks.” Shaynna agreed it was an incredible improvement from their first bathroom.

As the judging wrapped up, Jess piped up and made special mention of the fact all the Blockheads had rallied around them in the early hours of the morning to help them finish the room. Through tears, she said, “It was my favourite night on the Block, ever.” She laughed as she admitted they had planned to split any money they might win… it certainly didn’t look like that was a possibility.

And the winners are…
After such specific feedback, it was no shock to see the scores fall a certain way. Hans and Courtney took out the top spot and won 20 grand off their reserve, Hayden and Sara came second and scored 15 grand and the girls popped into third place with a saving of 10 grand off their reserve.

Next week will be the final chance to take anything off a reserve… but more importantly, it’s also the very last room these Blockheads will renovate. After that feedback, we have a feeling some of them will be very relieved.
