'Banned' product throws Maddy and Charlotte into chaos just hours before Backyard Reveals on The Block 2024

Sisters Maddy and Charlotte thought they were on to a winner with their outdoor kitchen during Backyard and Pool Week – but things quickly unravelled when the foreman laid his eyes on it.

To complete the space within their tight budget, Maddy spent all day searching for a cost-friendly bench top and was very pleased with her thrifty find.

But as her team installed it the night before they were meant to reveal the space to the judges, Foreman Dan and site manager Simmo visited with some terrible news.

"It's a banned product," they told her.

"Any product with silica in it has been banned, with a high percentage, and this benchtop has like 70 per cent of it in there," Dan explained. "It's no longer produced, manufactured, shipped in to Australia.”

They could not use it, even as a temporary placeholder for their Backyard Reveal.

Maddy was "so sad" as she worried about their chance of winning slipping away.

"I can't afford this mistake... I'm just sad for everyone who's put so much work into this," she said through tears.

The Block continues Sunday at 7pm and Monday to Wednesday at 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
