Exclusive: The Snackmasters chefs reveal what surprised them the most about their time on the show

They might be the masters of cuisine in their own kitchens, but the chefs quickly learned it's a whole different ball game in the Snackmasters kitchen.

Some chefs flourished while others cracked under pressure as they tackled a totally different kind of cooking.

We sat down with the Season 2 chefs and they revealed what surprised them most about the process and how they felt about going head-to-head with some of their culinary peers.

With three restaurants under his belt, Adam D'Sylva is no stranger to running a busy kitchen but even he admitted that the Snackmasters cook was "intense and challenging".

"It was the hardest cooking challenge I have ever done," Adam confessed.

Adam took on the Tim Tam and the Iced Vovo in his cook-off. The pressure mounted and at one point Adam walked off after it became too much, but took out the win in the end.

While the pressure was the most challenging part for Adam, chef Laura Sharrard was most taken aback by the unknown factor.

"I had to make a snacks that I never heard of and never tasted in my life," Laura laughed.

Even though he lost his cook-off, Chin Chin's executive chef Benjamin Cooper said Snackmasters "has been one of the best things he's done in years".

"It's a really wonderful challenge trying to recreate something without a recipe, it throws the brain into a deep dive and makes you question all sorts of daily cooking assumptions," Benjamin said.

"I was honestly shocked at how much I both enjoyed it and grew from it."

For Jarrod Walsh the Snackmasters challenge was a real eyeopener.

"I didn't realise how long it takes to make every single piece factory perfect," he said.

"It usually takes less than 15 minutes to finish a bag of Cheezels and definitely less than five mins to eat a package of Jumpy's, yet it took us three days to try to even get close to how they make it in the factories!"

While cracking the snack was half the challenge, the other half was to not get psyched out by your opponent.

Adam D'Sylva said the competition "didn't bother him".

"It was just a matter of who was the best on the day," he said.

Chef Sam Young revealed that he saw his competitors as friends not foes.

"I never see other chefs as a competitor, as I know there are so many great chefs out there," he said. "I am just going to do my best, create a good vibe and enjoy my time!"
