'Ticks all the boxes': Unlikely destination Aussie families are heading to this Christmas
The festive season is just around the corner.
And a surprising holiday destination has emerged as a favourite for Aussies heading overseas this Christmas.
As costs remain high and everything feels expensive, Australian travellers have embraced a low-cost Asian destination as a perfect summer holiday spot.

Vietnam is the number one destination for Australians taking international holidays over the peak Christmas and New Year period, according to multiple travel companies.
The destination is especially popular for families, thanks to its relative affordability, safety, and ease of access.

Data from Intrepid Travel shows that Vietnam is top of the list for both Aussie and Kiwi travellers during the festive season.
Intrepid's 'Vietnam Family Holiday' trip is particularly popular, with an itinerary specifically designed for travellers of all ages.

Brett Mitchell, Intrepid Travel Managing Director, says Vietnam "ticks a lot of boxes" for Aussie families.
"It's quite affordable compared to classic European holidays, the weather is very mild and you're only looking at an 8-9 hour flight, which is manageable with kids," he tells 9Travel.
Vietnam also offers the chance to introduce your kids to a totally different culture, says Brett, with things like cooking classes and market tours.
There's a ton to do, for all ages and interests. If you want island vibes, head to Phu Quoc. For a vibrant city stay, Ho Chi Minh City is the best spot. If you prefer history and culture, add Hanoi to your itinerary.
Da Nang offers great beaches alongside a big city, Hoi An is a must-visit for foodies, while Sapa or the Ha Giang Loop offer trekking and mountain scenery.

Wendy Wu Tours also reports a spike in Aussie families booking tours in Vietnam to close out the year.
They even have a specific Christmas in Vietnam tour which traverses the country over 11 days, spending Christmas Day in beautiful Hạ Long Bay.
The company reports a 54 per cent jump in Australian visitors to Vietnam in early 2025, with that number expected to grow in the coming months.
Phu Quoc, an idyllic island in the country's south, was named by Expedia as one of their Destinations of the Year for 2026, noting that global interest in the region is rising fast.
The island has seen a 53 per cent search increase on Expedia in the past year alone.

Plus, once you're there, your Aussie dollars go a long way.
A mid-range hotel is about $60 to $100 a night, restaurant meals are about $10, while street food meals will only set you back a dollar or two.
Vietnamese coffee, which is an absolute must-try, costs about $2 in a nice café.
