Tropical Aussie destination named as the cheapest place to fly for a holiday this year

It's one of the aims of most Aussies - finding a holiday getaway at a reasonable price, especially with interest rates on the up again.

And new data shared with 9Travel reveals the cheapest places for Aussies to fly to, both overseas and domestically.

Overall one place stood out, according to the stats from Skyscanner.

Cairns, in Far North Queensland is the cheapest destination to travel to from an Australian perspective this year.

That's based on an adult return economy flight from other Australian cities.

The price remains a bargain throughout the year, with the average cost $340.

As well as becoming a bit of a buzzing but small city, it's the gateway for the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.

There's also the Kuranda Scenic railway, Fitzroy Island, Cairns Aquarium and the city's huge public lagoon to visit.

Exotic beaches mean it can give you tropical holiday vibes at a bargain price.

However, there are also plenty of affordable places to stay, with multiple campsites including from brands NRMA and BIG4.

Little ones will appreciate the children's pool and Kids' Club at Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, another popular family spot.

Queensland overall came out as the top state to travel to for affordable flights.

The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, which have long been family favourites, were highly ranked by number crunchers.

Palm Cove near Cairns.

Ballina in northern NSW and the closest airport to beach haven Byron Bay also consistenly ranked well for flight prices.

Skyscanner says the average flight price to get there from other places in Aus is $43.

Melbourne also made the list.

Launceston and Hobart in Tasmania were a little more expensive but still made the rankings with average flight prices under $250.

For overseas travel, not surprisingly some of Australia's closest neighbours are among the cheapest to fly to for a holiday.

A new hotel with the biggest pool in the South Pacific is among new spots opening in the island nation this year.

Singapore, which is as much a destination as a layover spot came out next with average flights under $1000 at $959.

Finally making the top five was Seoul in South Korea, which is having a moment, and not just due to the craze for KPop.
