US Open RECAP: De Minaur powers into US Open quarter finals with four-set victory

That wraps up our live coverage of this all-Aussie affair, won in four sets by Alex de Minaur.

After beating Thompson, de Minaur's next battle is against Jack Draper on Thursday morning.

Jannik Sinner and Tommy Paul is the other fourth-round match on this half of the draw, and the winner of this one will play Daniil Medvedev.

Should De Minaur beat Draper, he will face the winner of that match, likely to be played on Saturday morning (AEST).

On the other side of the draw, Taylor Fritz will play Alex Zverev, and Grigor Dimitrov will play Frances Tiafoe.

Alex de Minaur and Jordan Thompson are close friends off the court.

Despite a five-year age gap, the pair were close in juniors, and remained close as Thompson aged into the open competition.

Even now, they spend as much time as they can together and regularly stay at each other's houses when not playing.

"I've got so much respect for Thommo," De Minaur began in his courtside interview.

"We've grown up together - he's been like a big brother to me. I really appreciate everything he's done for me.

"He's a hell of a competitor, my Davis Cup teammate, and I can't wait to share the court many, many times with him."

De Minaur will face Brit Jack Draper on Thursday morning (AEST) for a spot in the semis. The Aussie has won all three of their previous encounters.

De Minaur got the job done the first time of asking - a big serve out wide that Thompson barely managed to get back.

Unforced errors are killing Thompson here.

Alex De Minaur has the break again, and will shortly serve for the match.

At 30-all in that 10th game, he served wide and had De Minaur on the run. He had three chances to win the point, but couldn't get it done.

Demon managed to hit returns from the first two - a volley and a smash that should have finished the job - before a smash cleared the baseline.

"You've gotta put that volley away. It's like he thought that point was over - he didn't commit to it at all," Mark Woodforde said in commentary.

He took it to deuce with a forehand winner, but De Minaur won the next two points - the second of which was another unforced error off a volley.

He had to work for it, but Alex de Minaur does eventually hold his serve to stay alive in this fourth set.

They went point for point to deuce, before Thompson made two errors - one forced, one unforced.

This is the kind of battle we were hoping for at the start of this one.

This fourth set is turning into a cracker!

Thompson fell 0-40 down, and let out a little outburst towards his box. I couldn't hear exactly what he was saying, but I could definitely hear a certain four-letter word starting with F on a couple of occasions.

But he rallied from there to win the next five-straight points to hold on.

He'll now have all the momentum, and will now force De Minaur to hold serve to save the set.

He's back! De Minaur made two double faults in that game and Thompson was able to capitalise and break back again!

Demon really seems to have some serving yips in this set.

Back on-serve at 4-4.

This could be all she wrote - De Minaur has won yet another break and is up 4-3 in this fourth set.

Can Thompson fight back?

But that's not the way to consolidate - down 0-15, Thompson made a shocking error when he blasted a regulation forehand wide.

Sensing an opportunity on a second serve, De Minaur played a lovely passing backhand when Thompson came to the net to go up 0-40.

Thompson saved the first point when De Minaur hit one long, and then forced Demon into another error from a lovely drop shot he couldn't get back over the net.

But then, seemingly out of nowhere, a regulation forehand from Thompson finds the frame and gets sent to the moon.

"Oh no ... off the frame and the lead disappears," Leif Shiras quipped in commentary.
