Medvedev apologised to his wife for not winning on their anniversary, and Djokovic brought down the house when he apologised to her for beating him.

"I'm sorry about the result today and please don't get this in the wrong way. Happy anniversary to your wife. I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he said with a laugh.

"It comes from a good place. Honestly, you know, if I knew that the anniversary is today, maybe, you know, the result..."

Djokovic said he had the idea of the Mamba shirts to pay tribute to Kobe Bryant about a week ago.

"I didn't share it with anyone up to a few days ago when I asked my people to help me out to make these shirts," he said in his victory speech.

"Kobe was a close, close friend. We chatted a lot about the winner's mentality when I was struggling with injury and trying to make my comeback (and) work my way back to the top of the game.

"He was one of the people that I relied on the most. He was always there for any kind of advice, any kind of support in the most friendly way.

"So of course, what happened a few years ago and him and his daughter passing hurt me deeply.

"I thought, you know, 24 is the jersey that he wore when he became a legend of the Lakers and world basketball. So I thought, you know, it could be a nice symbolic thing to acknowledge him."

As he has after his previous titles, Djokovic has pulled out a custom jacket with 24 emblazoned on them.

His family are all wearing them too.

"This is your trophy as much as it is mine. This is your success. I love you," he said in his victory speech.

Daniil Medvedev has used his losing speech to apologise to his wife.

He won his US Open title in 2021 on their anniversary, and this final again fell on their anniversaty.

"I was here two years ago when I won and I was like, what a great, anniversary gift for my wife and stuff like this ... pretty shit one today," he said to roars of laughter from the crowd.

"It's funny because dates usually change, but today is Sunday again is the anniversary. So I thought like, come on, do it one more time."

An awesome nod to basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who wore the No.24 shirt during his NBA career.

The Serbian superstar beats Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

He levels Margaret Court's record of 24 grand slam titles.

"Djokovic is king of New York once again," Aussie great Todd Woodbridge says.

"Extraordinary."

But he's wasted it - a Medvedev unforced error down 30-40 gives Djokovic the break straight back.

"He's mentally starting to break down - that second set proving so costly," Todd Woodbridge said for Nine.
