An unlikely triumph:

Short track was the event in which Steven Bradbury won gold in the Salt Lake City Games in 2002 in one of the most famous moments in Winter Olympics history. (Getty)
Lucky to be there:
He was fortunate to be in the semi-final at all after finishing third in the quarter-final only to be gifted a spot when a rival was disqualified for obstructing an opponent. Bradbury chose to change tactics in the semi-final, electing to remain behind his competitors to avoid being involved in any incidents. It paid dividends immediately in the semi-final where he finished second after three of his opponents fell. (Getty)

Short track is a fast paced, high speed event raced on an ice rink with a circumference of 111.12m, the standard size of an international ice hockey rink, compared with a speed skating rink which is 400m in length.
Quick chaos:
There are generally four to six athletes in a race, with events taking place over 500m, 100m, 1500m and 3000m. There are also relay events over 3000m for women and 5000m for men. (AAP)Close proximity:

Relays:
There are eight teams of four skaters in the relay events, with the top two advancing to the next round. In the relay events, teams decide how manly laps each competitor skates except for the last two laps, which mus be completed by the same skater.

Short track has a relatively short Olympic history after being a demonstration sport in 1988 in Calgary before becoming a full Olympic sport in 1992. (AAP)
