Paris 2024 Day 9 RECAP: Opals through to quarter finals after 'gutsy' win over France; American Lyles wins 100m gold in wild photo finish

The Aussies are through to the quarters, with a seven point win over France in the final pool game.

If they'd won by six points or less, they would've finished third on the table and gone through as the best finishing third place qualifier.

But but finishing second, we're through on merit and will have a slightly easier run of it.

Both the Boomers and Opals are through to the quarter-finals, with confirmation to come through shortly of who the women will play.

ANOTHER time out with 11 seconds left on the clock, and the Aussies lead by eight courtesy of a two-pointer and a pair of free throws.

Surely that's job done?

In commentary for Nine, Olympian Shane Heal said it's been a "gutsy" performance.

Play resumed briefly, and the Aussies sunk a two-pointer to push the lead to a somewhat comfortable seven points.

But the French are going aggressive, and immediately sunk a three after getting the ball back.

Then the Opals called a time out. Still 33 secs on the clock and the lead is four!

France has dominated its opening two pool matches, but hasn't had things its own way in this game.

Nigeria are already confirmed to go through, and the winner of this one will join them.

Under a minute left on the clock, and the Aussies are still up by five points.

The French sunk a three pointer and then immediately called for a time-out.

The Opals are still in action against the host nation in the final group match of the women's basketball.

The equation is simple. Win, and the Opals will go through to the quarters on top of Group B, lose and they're on their way to Charles de Gaulle airport tomorrow.

They're up six points with under three minutes remaining, but the hosts are coming at the Aussies!

Speaking to Nine, Lyles thought he'd been done.

"There was a lot of doubt, I am not going to lie," he told Tony Jones trackside.

"I thought I didn't out do Kishane there, I thought he out did me. When I crossed the line I went up to him and said, 'Hey, man, I think you got that one'.

"When it came out I thought, 'oh my gosh, I am amazing'."

Snoop Dogg has been everywhere these Games, and he was in the stands watching this one.

After both men hit the line together, there was a delay of about 20 seconds while officials reviewed the finish and awarded a winner.

Lyles and Thompson both shook hands while waiting for the result to flash up on the board.

Thompson could be heard screaming "come on, man!" at the board.

And then it was heartbreak for the Jamaican, and jubilation for the America. Lyles ripped his name bib off and held it aloft.

What a moment!

This is how close that finish was - all eight runners covered by only a couple of tenths of a second.

That was without a doubt one of the greatest, if not THE greatest men's 100m final in history.
