Magnifique! Four golds in one day make this Australia's greatest Olympics

PARIS: Four gold medals on another astonishing day in Paris has given Australia its best-ever tally at an Olympics - with another four days still to go.

Australia's 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th golds came within hours to set a new outright record and give some breathing room in third place on the medal tally.

Golds on the water in Marseille, at the skate park at La Concorde and another at the velodrome all came in a little over two hours.

Then at the Stade de France, pole vaulter Nina Kennedy launched herself into the history books.

The four gold medals and two bronzes made it Australia's best-ever single day at an Olympics, surpassing the four gold medals won on August 1, 2021, in Tokyo.

Third place would also be Australia's best overall ranking on the medal tally since Melbourne in 1956.

But the success on day 12 was soured with an off-field scandal hitting the Australian team, with a hockey star arrested for attempting to buy cocaine in Paris.

Track cyclists rocket to gold

Australia captured gold in dramatic fashion in the men's team pursuit at the velodrome, defeating Great Britain after a late blunder by the opposition.

An Australian team featuring Oliver Bleddyn, Sam Welsford, Conor Leahy and Kelland O'Brien took gold in a time of 3:42.067 - the first in 20 years.

Aussie skateboarder does it again

Reigning champion Keegan Palmer clinched his second Olympic gold medal in the men's park skateboarding final as he added to his Tokyo 2020 crown.

It capped a clean sweep for Australia in the skateboarding park events following 14-year-old Arisa Trew's gold yesterday.

Dinghy dominance as sailor goes back-to-back

He was made to wait, but Australian sailor Matt Wearn is now too a dual Olympic champion after finally securing the dinghy gold medal in Marseille.

The medal race was delayed by a day and again after starting due to a wind shift but nothing could stop Wearn from bringing home the gold for the second time.

Wearn's parents were in Marseille to watch their son win and spoke to Nine's Olympic coverage about their "awesome" son.

It's Nina's night in Paris

There were Aussies everywhere in the track and field at the Stade de France on Wednesday, with another two medals adding to what was already an incredible day.

Kennedy was the only athlete to soar over the bar at 4.90m and her first Olympic gold was secured when her US opponent could not clear 4.95m.

At the other end of the stadium, Matt Denny was winning a bronze medal in the discus, narrowly missing his own Australian record.

Earlier, Australian duo Jemima Montag and Rhydian Cowley won the bronze medal in the inaugural marathon race walk mixed relay.

Montag entered the final leg in fourth position, but produced a sensational comeback surge to win her second bronze medal in Paris.

Peter Bol failed to advance directly to the semi-finals of the men's 800m then took a swing at the World Anti-Doping Agency over his case.

Hurdler Michelle Jenneke suffered a brutal fall in her 100m hurdles heat, feeling something "pop" near her knee before tumbling onto the track.

She was able to finish the race to make the repechage but said she would need further assessment on her injury.

Tears as Opals close in on maiden gold

Tears flowed from players on both teams as the Opals thrashed Serbia 85-67 in their quarter-final to put them into the medal rounds.

Australia are now into the final four, meaning they're guaranteed to play for a medal.

Sharks cough up lead to lose in shootout

The Australian men's water polo team is out of the Olympic tournament after losing on penalties to the USA.

The Sharks had led 5-2 and had an extra man in the pool at times after a USA gun was red-carded.

But after the USA clawed back to end regulation time at 7-7, the penalty shootout didn't go Australia's way.
