Australian Grand Prix qualifying RE-CAP: George Russell takes dominant pole, Oscar Piastri to start fifth

Broc Feeney has broken Brodie Kostecki's stranglehold on this race meeting, holding on to win a thriller.

After the restart from the Randle crash, Kostecki had the blowtorch on the back of Feeney's Mustang, and contact at one point saw Feeney skip through the grass at the left-right chicane at turn 9-10.

But he was able to keep the 2023 Champion behind him to take the win.

After a couple of laps under safety car to fetch Cooper Murray's stricken Camaro, the field returned to racing ... but only briefly.

The safety car is back out after Thomas Randle hit the wall at turn five. It looks like there might have been contact with the new Supra of Ryan Wood.

That'll take some repairing before tomorrow's final race of the weekend.

The delayed finish to F1 qualifying meant this race will be shorter. Thankfully they were given an extension on their track curfew, but the race still has to finish just after 6.30.

There is still a Carrera Cup race scheduled after this Supercars race.

The third Supercars race of the weekend has been just as chaotic as the other two.

Off the start, Broc Feeney dived to the right and covered Aaron Cameron well. Further back, there was contact between Jayden Ojeda, Zach Bates and Cameron Hill, which resulted in the former being spun around.

Then on the exit of turn two, contact between championship leader Matt Payne and James Golding resulted in the former clouting the wall and picking up not one, not two but three punctures.

Then on lap two, Cooper Murray got punted into the gravel. Will Brown - who was slapped with a 15 second time penalty in Thursday's race for contact with Murray at the same corner - was down the inside of Jack Le Brocq, who was also down the inside of Murray.

Three in to one never go, and that was the end of that.

Shout out to Isack Hadjar - in his first race as Max Verstappen's teammate, he'll start the Australian Grand Prix from third on the grid.

His four-time world champion teammate, however, will start from 20th after crashing out in Q1.

"It was a very smooth qualifying," the Frenchman said.

"We kind of built up to it, and it was a very good last lap. I want to keep my position, as a second podium would be good."

George Russell really dominated that session at Albert Park.

He topped all three sessions comfortably, and took a deserving pole.

"A great day - we knew there was a lot of potential in the car," he said after the session.

"Really happy to have Kimi here next to me as well, as the team did an amazing job in the garage today.

"I'm excited for the race tomorrow, I think we can bring some quite exciting racing [to the fans]."

"I think a lot of the simple things like race starts, pit stops are a hell of a lot more challenging for these new cars.

"So, who knows what will happen tomorrow. We will work hard tonight."

Good of him to nod to Kimi - his car was in a thousand pieces only two hours before qualifying after a heavy crash in final practice.

The red flag for Max Verstappen's crash might have been the extra time the Mercedes team needed to get him out on track.

"It has been a very, very stressful day," the Italian said, perhaps stating the obvious.

"The mechanics today were the heroes. We couldn't even set-up the car, we just went out.

"It was not easy, I needed to dig deep but I need a clean weekend next time as it did definitely compromise qualifying."

GEORGE RUSSELL IS ON POLE!

Mr Saturday is back - George Russell has dominated qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix, taking pole by two tenths over teammate Kimi Antonelli.

Isack Hadjar will start his first race for Red Bull from third, ahead of Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris.

George Russell is still a half second clear of the pack and they're all about to start their final push laps.

Who will get pole?

The red flags have flown with just under 10 minutes left after two fans were left on Kimi Antonelli's car as he came out onto the track.

While one of them ended up in the gravel trap on the outside of turn one, the other ended up in the middle of the track between turn two and three.

It was then collected by Lando Norris, who obliterated it.

Somehow, Norris' car looks undamaged. The red flag was called to clean up the debris.
