MELBOURNE: Oscar Piastri's woes at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix are the kind of demons that could haunt a driver for their entire career.

The devastation of crashing out before a Formula 1 race even begins is a nightmare scenario for any driver, but for Piastri, the stakes were heightened tenfold.

Australia is a nation that barracks for its own with unparalleled ferocity; fans flooded Albert Park in a sea of green-and-gold McLaren merchandise to support their home-grown hero, only to watch his race end in the barriers before the lights went green.

The atmosphere was palpable.

Sky Sports host Simon Lazenby noted that Albert Park had been "stunned into silence", while veteran commentator Martin Brundle admitted to being swept up in the tragedy of the moment.

"This is heartbreaking," Brundle said.

"I could cry. I literally had a tear in my eye. Everybody is heartbroken."

But there's no need to panic that this is the end of the Aussie's 2026 season.

In a gruelling 24-race season, this result is rarely a perfect barometer for the year ahead.

Furthermore, Albert Park remains an outlier.

Drivers are very open about how Melbourne and the track layout are quite different for the teams ahead of China and Japan.

Those two races are purpose built, high-speed circuits while Albert Park is a street circuit that demands a continuous high-speed corner exit.

Even race winner George Russell was quick to quell any noise around his runaway victory, as he openly discussed how long and arduous this season is set to be.

The new cars are still being massively overhauled through the year as teams start to further understand the new regulations.

"At the moment it just feels like another race win to be honest," Russell admitted.

"I mean we've raced one race into a very long season and of course I want to fight for race wins, week in week out.

"But we're all here now to fight for a world championship and that's what we've been working so hard towards.

"And if we want to do that, we still need to raise our game because there were a lot of areas today that we underachieved.

"Mainly around the race start, having the battery in the right place and we were lucky not to cut ourselves off."

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has always stood in Piastri's corner since his debut, vocally speaking of the 24-year-old's mental fortitude in tough moments, specifically in the championship fight last year.

He argued that this setback will be no different.

"Very unfortunate," said Stella.

"Definitely a tough moment for him in front of the Australian crowd.

"Oscar, let me spend a word from this point of view.

"Very tough guy mentally. He will use all this to get even more concentrated and determined starting from China.

"We will make sure that we all face this in a united way. We are a team in any situation that may involve any of our team."

China will see a new challenge ignited, with a sprint race on Saturday for the teams to contend with.

The first practice session in Shanghai will begin on Friday at 2.30pm AEDT.
