Maher’s emotional tribute to family

Simon Brunsdon

Ciaron Maher is the first trainer to ever snag the Melbourne Cup trifecta.

He gets emotional when paying tribute to his family following today’s triumph.

“My mum and dad, the rest of my family that are here as well,” he said.

“To my partner Alice and two daughters… a big shout out to them, I miss you a lot.

“I’ve been away for about two weeks now.”

How winner mowed down runaway leader

Liam O'Loughlin

Point Of Law has bolted in to win the Lexus Melbourne Cup in just his sixth career start and his second race on Australian soil.

The three-year-old colt, who won the Geelong Cup last month after arriving at the Ciaron Maher stable, flew home with Ethan Brown in the saddle.

Royal Supremacy – another one of Maher’s runners – led the majority of the race and was clear by 20 lengths at one stage, but faded late and missed a placing.

Speaking to Nine after the race, Brown said he knew from 300 metres out that Point Of Law was in with a chance, despite being so far back.

Billionaire’s huge gamble backfires

Sophie Wisely

Point Of Law has won the 2026 Lexus Melbourne Cup, leaving Irish billionaire JP McManus ruing his mammoth $1 million bet on Hopewell Rock, after the heavily backed horse failed to deliver.

The 75-year-old was in for a staggering $9.6m payout if Hopewell Rock won, but it finished ninth.

Trainer reacts to stunning Cup trifecta

Simon Brunsdon

Ciaron Maher has just trained the Melbourne Cup trifecta.

That is insane. He is the first trainer to do that in 166 years of the Cup.

Point Of Law, Zahrann, and Juja Kibo all finish on the podium for Australia’s leading trainer.

They all managed to run down Royal Supremacy, who shot out to a huge lead.

“I knew I had my best hand going into it,” Maher says.

“I certainly didn’t know that Royal Supremacy would leave by that far. But nothing better than a true stayign test and Point Of Law, he’s just thrived.

“It’s been a whirlwind, really, but I’m very proud of all the team. Like to get three horses in the first three spots. I don’t even know where the rest finished yet, but very proud.”

Fantastic story as jockey reacts to miracle comeback

Simon Brunsdon

Ethan Brown has a great story.

He had a bad fall a couple of years ago and almost never made it back. He credits trainer Ciaron Maher for convincing him to come back.

He is almost lost for words after winning the Melbourne Cup aboard Point Of Law.

“Don’t wake me up,” Clipperton tells Billy Slater.

“Amazing feeling.

“It’s been a bumpy road, lot of challenges thrown my way… it’s days like this that it all pays off.”
