‘Fingers crossed’: Slater hoping for J-Mac miracle

Liam O'Loughlin

Billy Slater has been a busy man so far in Melbourne Cup week, interviewing the winning jockeys after every race at Flemington.

But the next one could be extra special for the NRL legend, who has a share in Cooly – ridden by James McDonald and trained by Peter Moody.

“Don’t talk her up too much, you’re putting the pressure on me,” Slater said.

“We didn’t breed this filly, she was a purchase at a Magic Millions sale a few years ago. She grew up on our farm down here in Victoria . She is a lovely animal, she’s got a great nature and she just happens to run pretty fast.

“It’s a step-up in grade, but we’ve employed James McDonald and hopefully he can weave his magic and she’ll go past this post first, that would be nice.

“The step-up in class is the big question mark, so fingers crossed.”

Cooly is paying $34 odds with the bookies in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes.

Benny Scarf – one of the most well-known figures on social media when it comes to horse racing – is celebrating a huge collect on the Melbourne Cup.

The young Sydneysider placed $15,000 on Point Of Law to win the great race at Monday’s Call of the Card and has now collected $125,000.

Scarf has become famous for daily bets and videos of him reacting to winners – and sometimes, losers – to his 221,000 Instagram followers.

This is what it means!

Maher’s emotional tribute to family

Simon Brunsdon

Ciaron Maher is the first trainer to ever snag the Melbourne Cup trifecta.

He gets emotional when paying tribute to his family following today’s triumph.

“My mum and dad, the rest of my family that are here as well,” he said.

“To my partner Alice and two daughters… a big shout out to them, I miss you a lot.

“I’ve been away for about two weeks now.”

How winner mowed down runaway leader

Liam O'Loughlin

Point Of Law has bolted in to win the Lexus Melbourne Cup in just his sixth career start and his second race on Australian soil.

The three-year-old colt, who won the Geelong Cup last month after arriving at the Ciaron Maher stable, flew home with Ethan Brown in the saddle.

Royal Supremacy – another one of Maher’s runners – led the majority of the race and was clear by 20 lengths at one stage, but faded late and missed a placing.

Speaking to Nine after the race, Brown said he knew from 300 metres out that Point Of Law was in with a chance, despite being so far back.
