US Open AS IT HAPPENED: JJ Spaun joins elite club with fairytale two-shot win at Oakmont

Adam Scott was at a loss to describe his final round shocker that saw him plummet down the order at Oakmont.

Speaking to media, he lamented missed fairways which punished him and an inability to adapt to the rapidly-changing conditions.

"It was kind of -- it was tough. It was bad conditions. No one really had a good score," he said.

"I missed the fairway. I hadn't done that all week really, then I did, and I paid the price and lost a lot of shots out there (and) couldn't recover.

"Conditions were just tough. They were tough at the start. It was very windy. Hadn't been that windy all week. Front nine played tough, then once the fairways were soaked, it was very hard controlling the golf ball."

Scott admitted the rain delay did not help him. He said he felt good before the 90-minute delay and only OK after it.

"But I left every kind of tee shot to the right coming in, and that was impossible to recover from almost," he said.

"These kind of things happen all the time. Some people go home (during weather delays), and some people get a bit more rowdy when you come back out. It's a slightly different atmosphere. It can affect the rhythm of things.

"Unfortunately, I think the course just couldn't take much more water really. I didn't adapt to those conditions well enough."

JJ Spaun has just won himself a hefty payday, pocketing AUD$6.6m for that effort.

The total purse was a touch over AUD$33.1million.

Adam Scott really failed to fire after that weather delay. He and Sam Burns shot a combined 17-over par in this final round.

Scott ended up slipping all the way out of the top-10, finishing with a 9-over 79.

JJ Spaun has won the US Open by making surely one of the most incredible birdie putts in the tournament's history.

He was a good 25m from the hole and only needed to two-putt to guarantee the win.

Instead, after getting a great look at the putt from Victor Hovland, he rolled it in. It never looked like missing.

It was the longest made putt for the entire week.

With his family - his wife and two daughters - watching on from the stands, he waved to the crowd and kissed his daughter.

JJ Spaun just birdied the 17th to give himself a one-shot lead standing on the 18th.

Adam Scott has almost certainly fallen out of contention how. He just made double bogey on the par-3 16th after missing the green and needing two shots to get out of the rough.

Due to the rapidly fading light, the USGA has just announced any playoff will be held tomorrow.

Adam Scott had a chance to move back into a share of the lead, but instead walked off the green two back.

He had a long look at birdie on the 15th and almost made it, but he missed the par save coming back the other way and walked off with bogey.

Sam Burns is fighting to stay in this tournament. He found the fairway on the 15th, and asked for relief from casual water.

There were splashes off the ground when he took his practice swings, but a rules official denied the request.

When he played the shot, the ball hooked well left of the green and looks to have nestled down in the deep rough.

He's not happy.

Scott finally got some luck in the rough and had a good lie, and found the middle of the green.

Burns just played his shot, and didn't make the putting surface.
