Almost four years after Usman Khawaja was dumped from the Australian team during a fruitless Ashes tour with the bat, the veteran opener has broken through for his maiden Test century on English soil to lead a desperately needed fightback by the tourists at Edgbaston.
Australia is 5-311 and trailing by 82 at stumps on day two of the first Test after Khawaja scored his 15th century in the longest format to help rescue the visitors from a grim opening session.

The Aussies reach stumps at 5-311, meaning they trail England's first-innings total by 82.
David Warner (nine), Marnus Labuschagne (zero) and Steve Smith (16) fell in a grim opening session as the Aussies stumbled to lunch at 3-78, but Usman Khawaja led the visitors back into a pleasing position as he compiled his 15th Test hundred.
England was hamstrung by gloveman Jonny Bairstow, who missed an opportunity to stump Cameron Green, dropped Alex Carey and missed another catching chance to remove Carey.
Khawaja was also bowled for 112, only to be reprieved by a Stuart Broad no-ball.

Crucial Aussie runs continue to pile up as Alex Carey moves to 50 late in the final session of day two.
The gloveman reaches his half-century as he nicks a Moeen Ali ball between wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow and first slip Joe Root, Bairstow missing another chance.
The visitors are 5-309.

Usman Khawaja has his off stump shattered by Stuart Broad, but the England quick is called for a front-foot no-ball.
Broad appears confused and is in dialogue with standing umpire Marais Erasmus, but replays show the no-ball call was correct.
Broad, charging in from around the wicket to the left-handed Khawaja, bowled the ball with a scrambled seam and got it to nip in. It fizzed between the veteran's bat and front pad and smashed into the top of off, but he'd bowled a very marginal no-ball.

The Aussie nicks a Joe Root delivery that pitched outside off but Bairstow grasses the ball.
Earlier in this innings, Bairstow missed a golden chance to stump Cameron Green.
The tourists are 5-264 in the 80th over.

Incredibly special scenes in Birmingham as Usman Khawaja makes his maiden Test century on English soil and celebrates with enormous heart.
The veteran left-hander plays a late cut for four off the bowling of Ben Stokes and is overcome by emotion.
Khawaja was axed from the Australian side after the third Test of the 2019 United Kingdom Ashes, having scored just 122 runs at 20.33, and didn't play another Test until about two-and-half years later.
He also only had a top score of 54 in Test cricket in England before this innings, which he made in July 2013.
He'd notched six Test tons since returning to the XI in January 2022, but a question mark remained over his output in England — until today.
With the calmness and beautiful strokeplay synonymous with his batting, Khawaja has cobbled together his 15th Test century, playing the lead hand in the Aussies' fightback from a dire first session.
Since returning to the Australian team in the Sydney Test of 2022, Khawaja has piled up 1732 runs at 69.28.
He's compiled seven centuries and a top score of 195 not out.
Like Chris Rogers about 10 years earlier, Khawaja is churning out a mountain of runs deep into his 30s.

Cameron Green falls as Moeen Ali strikes!
The off-spinner floats the ball up outside off and gets it to spin sharply, ripping it between Green's bat and front pad.
"That is a beautiful delivery, that is a classical off-spinner's delivery, it's the dream delivery that," Ricky Ponting says on the Nine broadcast.
Green departs for 38 as the Aussies fall to 5-220 shortly after tea.

Tea is taken at Edgbaston with Usman Khawaja placed nicely on 84 and the Aussies in a much better position than at lunch.
The visitors only lost Travis Head (50) in the middle session and are 4-188 at tea, in reply to England's 8-393 declared.
Khawaja could be on the cusp of scoring his 15th Test century.
"Nothing seems to faze him," Steve O'Keefe said on Nine's coverage.
