The umpires have called stumps due to poor light with Australia 7-449 and trailing by 27, rounding out a session in which Pakistan broke through for three wickets.

A three-wicket blitz can be considered a barrage on this lifeless Rawalpindi deck, on which a combined 925 runs were scored over the first four days of the Test.

The final session saw left-arm orthodox tweaker Nauman Ali dismiss both Cameron Green and Steve Smith while sweeping, before right-arm paceman Naseem Shah clean bowled Alex Carey with a gem of a delivery.

Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey is trudging from the middle – but he doesn't have any reason to be miffed with himself.

Carey is out for 19 after right-arm Pakistan quick Naseem Shah, bowling around the wicket, scalped him with a jaffa, delivering a ball that jagged off the seam and thumped into the top of off.

"How about that!" Rob Key said on Fox Cricket.

"That is an absolute beauty. That has rattled into off stump. Done by the length and speed more than anything."

Steve Smith has lost his wicket four overs after Cameron Green and the former Test skipper has been dismissed in similar fashion.

Left-arm orthodox tweaker Nauman Ali has his fourth wicket of the innings after lulling both Green (48 runs) and Smith (78) into sweeping a ball pitched a long way outside leg stump.

Australia are 6-422 and trail by 52 after the loss of Smith, who had been searching for his first Test century since January 2021.

Green swept an Ali delivery but top-edged it to Iftikhar Ahmed at short fine leg, before Smith gloved a ball through to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan while sweeping.

Ali's leg-side tactic, which Rob Key said on Fox Cricket had left Green "devastated", is smart on such a docile pitch, which has offered virtually nothing for the bowlers over the opening four days.

Rising Australia all-rounder Cameron Green has lost his wicket on the cusp of a half-century, getting caught sweeping on 48 and being left "devastated".

The Western Australian swept a Nauman Ali delivery that pitched a long way outside leg stump, but he top-edged the ball to Iftikhar Ahmed at short fine leg.

The Pakistan breakthrough has Australia 5-407, trailing by 69.

"It was just a ball that he could have hit anywhere on the leg side," Rob Key said on Fox Cricket.

"It wasn't a great delivery.

"Tries to be a bit cute and hit it too fine.

"They are happy because they know they have bought a wicket.

"Cameron Green is devastated."

Steve Smith is on 68 from 167 balls at the beginning of the 115th over, as he searches to break a drought with a 28th Test century.

The former national captain hasn't made a Test ton since scoring 131 against India at the SCG in January 2021, and he's since had 11 century-less innings.

Australia's Steve Smith and Cameron Green are back in the middle after the tea break.

Australia have reached tea on the fourth day at 4-364, with Steve Smith on 61 and Cameron Green on 18.

The visitors still trail by 112 runs, so anything other than a draw is unlikely.

A combined 840 runs have been scored in the match and just eight wickets taken.

"Steve Smith remains and he looks set. Only a couple of times did he come out of his bunker and play some shots, and when he did it looked very, very good," said former England Test batter Rob Key on Fox Cricket.

"If you set your stall out there's nothing to worry about on this surface; you can just bat and bat and bat.

"And that will still be the plan for Australia: just keep on going, grind them into the ground."

Australia second drop Steve Smith has steered a Naseem Shah delivery through the leg side for a single to bring up a half-century.

The former No.1 batter in Test cricket took 112 balls to reach his 50 and peeled off six fours on the way.

Australia are 4-341 in reply to Pakistan's first dig of 4-476 declared.

Australia have lost another wicket on day four, with No.5 Travis Head caught behind for eight.

Head nicked a Nauman Ali delivery through to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan as Australia fell to 4-326 in the 88th over of their innings.
