Australia v Sri Lanka day three AS IT HAPPENED: Steve Smith's tactics on show again as Matt Kuhnemann strikes before stumps; Angelo Mathews suffers 'brain fade' after putting Australia under pressure

Jayasuriya edged the first ball of the over straight to Smith in the slips and what a finish that is!

Jayasuriya is out for 6 and now Australia will only need two wickets on day four before they go into bat.

Kusal Mendis walks off at 48 not out and Sri Lanka are 8-211.

The lead is currently at 54 runs.

"They are very, very close to wrapping up this series," Greg Blewett said on Seven in reference to Australia.

Beau Webster has a Test wicket as an off-spinner!

The chat around the bat had been all about short-leg.

And that's exactly where the ball went off Ramesh Mendis' bat with Travis Head taking the catch.

The Aussies were up and about too.

He started out his career as an off-spinner.

Now Beau Webster is backing bowling spin.

That's an awful brain fade from Angelo Mathews.

He had a century there ready for him and went big but found Beau Webster in the deep and he's taken a great catch. Nathan Lyon claims the wicket.

"That was sensational from Beau Webster," Simon Katich said on Seven.

Mathews departs for 76.

"It's a poor option," Katich adds when he notes Mathews hit into the wind.

"... you can only think the Galle heat sapped him and he's just had a brain fade because that was a strange shot."

At one stage of this session it looked like Australia could push for victory.

But Sri Lanka are fighting back.

Sri Lanka are 5-187 with Angelo Mathews on 71 not out and Kusal Mendis on 35.

The partnership is 54.

He's only bowled the two overs and gone for 12 runs.

But Mitchell Starc is back in the attack, replacing Matt Kuhnemann.

Starc has the hammer out to fix the pitch where his front foot lands.

That catch will no doubt be one of the biggest highlights of this Test.

"When you look back at his career everyone will talk about his runs ... but just as impressive is what he does in the field," Simon Katich said on Seven.

"That was an absolute screamer and it came at a critical time too ... (Dhananjaya de Silva) was starting to look dangerous."
