As weird as it sounds, those who ventured to the Gabba this morning will likely be hoping there's no more play today.

If less than 15 overs are bowled in a day, refunds are issued to ticketholders.

13.2 overs have been bowled so far. If 10 more are bowled, they're all out of luck.

If today was the only day's play you went to, that would ease some of the pain.

Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has been banned indefinitely from bowling after his action was deemed illegal.

In a statement released Saturday morning (AEDT), the ECB said an independent assessment of Al Hasan's action had determined an elbow extension "exceeded the 15 degree threshold" allowed in the rules.

Al Hasan was reported by umpires in a county game for Surrey against Somerset in September. It was his only match for the team.

This is the situation at the Gabba right now. It's very dark, very wet, and I reckon I'm more of a chance of winning lotto tonight than there is of play in the next hour.

The Gabba does have some of the best drainage in world cricket though, so as bad as that looks, I wouldn't say there's no chance of play again today.

But there's no denying that's an ugly sight.

Captain Tom Latham was 36 not out at the break and Will Young was unbeaten on 42. Young has come into the New Zealand as a replacement for Devon Conway whose wife is expecting their first child.

England won the toss and chose to bowl in warm, overcast conditions. There was only a little movement early on and the pitch at Seddon Park offered consistent pace and bounce.

There's a theme here, another shower has rolled through Brisbane and it's sent players scurrying from the field.
