Jacob Weitering eager to return in time for Opening Round as Carlton reveal injury severity

Carlton are confident star defender Jacob Weitering will be fit to play in the opening round, despite sustaining a rib fracture during the AFL State of Origin match.
The 28-year-old was involved in a nasty incident early in the match when he was crushed by Western Australia's Mitch Georgiades in a marking contest.
Georgiades appeared to land directly on Weitering's chest, and the Victorian star was in clear discomfort as medical staff rushed to his aid and later stretchered him off the field.

He was taken to hospital on Saturday night and was not cleared to be discharged until Sunday morning, as per a statement by Carlton.
At the time, the club said Weitering had "soreness around the chest area", but there was no exact way to declare an accurate recovery timeline.
Carlton have since confirmed that Weitering had fractured his ribs.
"Weitering has sustained a rib fracture, but he has been cleared of any other injury," Carlton confirmed.

"As a result, he remains a good chance to be available to play in opening round.
"The 28-year-old will now focus on making a full recovery."
Carlton stated it would not confirm his availability to play against the Sydney Swans until the medical assessments on the game week have been completed - a typical process in the sporting world.
Weitering admitted to reporters after landing at Melbourne Airport on Sunday evening that he had no regrets taking to the field in the State of Origin match.
"Not at all," he said.
"I absolutely loved the week. It was a good result, I kept up with the score in hospital. I would certainly do it again if I got the opportunity.
"There's a bit of soreness through the upper back and shoulder. Pretty sore, still. But I'll be doing everything I can to go get up and play in the Opening Round."
Victoria took out the clash 18.17 (125) to 15.11 (101) at a sold-out Optus Stadium.
