A UK mother-of-two has lost her battle with cervical cancer, which she contracted soon after missing a routine screening test.

Alexis Woolerton, from Leeds, was diagnosed with the disease in July 2017, reports The Metro.

Her partner, Ricky Walker, said: "Alex missed one cervical smear in 2015, which cost her life.

"She would wish people would learn from her and not put off going for cervical screening."

Woolerton, 34, had surgery and radiotherapy and was given the all clear in May 2018.

But by July, the cancer had returned and spread.

Smear tests are crucial to help detect pre-cancerous changes in the cervix but they do not diagnose cancer.

"If just one of you ladies take heed of this and book your smear test then Alex will not have died for nought," Walker said.

Woolerton leaves behind two daughters, Ava, eight, and Annie, seven.

She was an amateur singer and was forced to pull out of the X Factor and The Voice TV talent shows due to her illness.

"One and Only by Adele was our song," Walker said.

"She used to sing it to me with such a passion."

Woolerton lost her battle with cancer on Christmas Eve last year. Tragically, it was also her daughter's seventh birthday.
