Basketball coach Sydney Carter has broken her silence after the fierce backlash against her outfit choice during a college game.

The former professional WNBA player, who coaches the Texas A&M, received a wave of online criticism after she was pictured wearing a white turtleneck, pink leather pants and high heels on game day.

Sport fans took to social media to slam Sydney's fashion choices and claimed it was "inappropriate" to wear courtside — but she wasn't interested in being outfit shamed.

After Sydney posted several photos of herself from the game onto Twitter, trolls were quick to leave judgemental comments on her profile.

"Why would you dress in pants that tight to coach?" was just one of the many messages.

"She dressed like she's hitting the bar. I guess she prefers to look good rather than be good seeing her team's record," another person commented.

One fan asked on Facebook: "Is this outfit appropriate as a basketball coach?"

After the online furore, Sydney took to Instagram to defend her outfit choice and said she would persist in "unapologetically" expressing herself through fashion.

"Thank you to everyone for your support and kind words over the last few days. Representation matters," she wrote.

"As a Black woman in coaching, I take pride in showing that people who look like me don't have to diminish out light to appeal to others, whose opinions never mattered anyway.

"I will continue to unapologetically be myself, apply pressure, and show that Black women can express individuality while doing our jobs as a high level."

Sydney also shared other snapshots of her fashionable clothing at other games over her coaching career, proving it was her style.

The basketball coach also told Yahoo Life that the fashion criticism was part of a bigger sexism problem in the sports industry.

"You hear so many times that people don't want to watch women play basketball, because there's too many that look manly, or they play like a guy or don't play enough like guys," she said.

"Women can never satisfy anybody in any aspect of life. Just as a woman, it's hard enough. It's hard enough that we're not paid the same or that people think that we can't do some of the same things or something as well as men in a male-dominated industry."

Despite the backlash, Sydney also received huge support from fans and followers, including members of the Texas A&M team who wrote online: "Let them talk. We got your back."
