Royal family gives rare update on Thailand's 'sleeping princess' who has been in a coma for three years

Thailand's royal family has shared a rare update about their so called "sleeping princess".

Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, also known as Princess Bha, has been in a coma since December 2022 after collapsing due to a heart condition.

The Thai royal family has released a statement on the 45-year-old princess' health from her medical team.

Her medical team at the Chulalongkorn Red Cross Hospital in Bangkok have "detected a severe infection in the bloodstream, leading them to administer antibiotics and medication to stimulate blood pressure in order to maintain stable levels."

"The doctors have reported that the Princess' lungs and kidneys have been functioning with support from medical devices and medication."

Princess Bha is the eldest daughter of Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn and his first wife, Princess Soamsawali, one of seven children born to the couple.

She collapsed on December 14, 2022 while walking her dogs, falling into a coma from which she is not expected to recover.

Nationwide prayers were organised for the Princess, including at the hospital she was staying at.

The Thai royal attended high school in England at Heathfield School in Ascot and then Chitralada School before earing several degrees including Bachelor of Law and International Relations.

Princess Bha worked as a legal intern in the US before working briefly for the United Nations in New York ahead of her return to Thailand.

Over the years she held multiple positions including Attorney in the Office of the Attorney General in Bangkok and Thai ambassador to Austria.

The royal worked in the country's penal system on behalf of female prisoners including supports for pregnant inmate and their babies.

At the time of her collapse, Princess Bha had reportedly been training her dogs for the Thailand Working Dog Championship held by the Royal Thai Army.

She was initially taken to Pak Chong Nana Hospital and then transferred to the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.

As the first official update regarding her conditions since 2023, the Bureau of the Royal Family announced in August 2025 that Princess Bajrakitiyabha has been diagnosed with a severe bloodstream infection.

Doctors had to administer antibiotics to keep blood pressure stable.

She remains on life support.

Before her collapse, Princess Bha was considered the frontrunner to succeed her father.

Now it is thought the King's youngest child, Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, 20, may be the one to succeed his father to the throne.

He is the only child of the King and his third wife, Srirasmi Suwadee.
