Princess Eugenie reveals baby daughter’s name with links to past royalty and Australia

Princess Eugenie has revealed the name of her baby daughter as Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.

The princess, 36, said she and her husband Jack Brooksbank chose a name from “three people we love and admire past and present”.

Sharing a new photo of the baby on Instagram, Eugenie said her daughter’s names were “part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home”.

Princess Eugenie gave birth to Adelaide in Portugal, where she and Brooksbank live when not in London. The baby’s birth, on August 3, was announced by Buckingham Palace and King Charles and Queen Camilla said they were “delighted” at the news.

The new baby is the third child for Princess Eugenie and Brooksbank, following the birth of their sons August in 2021 and Ernest in 2023 at the Portland Hospital in London.

“Adelaide” was inspired by Queen Adelaide, who was married to King William IV and queen consort between 1830 to 1837. The Australian capital city of Adelaide was named after the queen, who was known for her charity work.

When Princess Eugenie married her husband in 2018, she wore two diamond brooches that were made for Queen Adelaide, commissioned by King William IV. The wheat-ear brooches were worn in Eugenie’s hair for the evening reception, on loan from Queen Elizabeth II who regularly wore the jewels pinned to her colourful coats.

The name Adelaide was also inspired by the late Maria Adelaide of Portugal, a princess from the House of Braganza famed for being part of the resistance during World War II.

Portugal’s other famous Adelaide is Santa Maria Adelaide, a popular figure known for her dedication to helping the poor throughout the 1800s and later revered as a saint, though she has not been canonised by the church.

“Elizabeth” was taken from Eugenie’s grandmother Elizabeth II who the princess said “we hold close in our hearts”. The baby would have been the 15th great-grandchild of the late queen and the third to be born since her death in 2022. 

The name “Annina” is understood to have come from a personal connection to Eugenie and her husband.

In announcing her baby’s name on Instagram, Princess Eugenie shared three new photos including one of her sons August, five, and Ernest, three, with their new sister.

“Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers,” she said.

Eugenie’s full post said: ”2 weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we’ve had the most special, cosy and love-filled time.

“We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home.

“Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers.”

Adelaide is 15th in line to the throne and is not expected to receive a royal title. 

The baby is the fifth grandchild for the former Duke and Duchess of York, who were stripped of their royal titles by King Charles in October last year because of their links to the late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein. 

Even though she was born in Portugal, a European Union country, the baby is not automatically entitled to Portuguese citizenship. To be eligible, babies born there must be registered and have at least one parent who has lived in Portugal for three consecutive years at the time of birth.

Adelaide is not the first modern British royal to be born outside the UK. In 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan’s daughter Princess Lilibet was born at a hospital in Santa Barbara in the US.
