Why Princess Beatrice's new baby won't get a royal title

Princess Beatrice and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have welcomed their second child, daughter Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi.

The baby arrived weeks earlier than expected, on January 22 at 12.57pm.

Baby Athena won't be given a royal title.

King Charles could bestow a title on his great-niece if desired, but it is unlikely to be asked for as this didn't happen for Sienna, Beatrice's first daughter.

Princess Eugenie's children with husband Jack Brooksbank, sons August and Ernest, also do not have royal titles.

Titles are not automatically bestowed on the children of members of the British royal family.

Princess Anne famously decided not to seek titles for her children Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, preferring for them to be free to forge their own paths.

Royal titles are typically only passed from the father who is in the direct line of succession, meaning Peter and Zara were not officially entitled to titles.

It is understood the late Queen Elizabeth extended a courtesy title to her daughter Anne's children, which was politely declined.

"I think it was probably easier for them, and I think most people would argue that there are downsides to having titles," Princess Anne told Vanity Fair in 2020.

"So I think that was probably the right thing to do."

Princess Beatrice's children are not devoid of titles altogether, owing to their father's nobility.

"Edoardo is the only male descendent taking the family into the next generation," his father, Count Allessandro Mapelli Mozzi, told the Daily Mail.

"He is a count, his wife will be a countess automatically and any of their children will be counts or nobile donna."

So, Beatrice's husband's official title is Count Edoardo Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, and Wolfie, his son from a previous relationship, is a count.

Daughters Sienna and Athena are countesses or "nobile donna."

Princess Beatrice and sister Princess Eugenie are the only children of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. They were bestowed British royal titles upon their births.

The children of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Archie, five, and Lilibet, three, were only bestowed royal titles after King Charles' ascension to the British throne in 2022 following Queen Elizabeth's death in September.

They are now known as Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi first met in 2018 and wed in July 2020 during COVID lockdown.

Both the late Queen Elizabeth and the late Prince Philip, Beatrice's grandparents, were in attendance.

Beatrice joined the royals on Christmas Day for their public walk in Sandringham, joined by her husband and stepson and further cementing her role in the monarchy.

It is understood Beatrice and sister Eugenie may be called upon more often to step at official events as King Charles continues his cancer battle.
