King Frederik and Queen Mary make their official return to public life in Paris following a short holiday in Denmark's south.

Following royal tradition, the monarch and Queen Mary took up residence at Graasten Palace with their youngest children Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, before they were joined by relatives.

The couple later left Graasten for a private holiday elsewhere.

In 2016, when in Brazil for the Rio Games, then-Crown Princess Mary was asked by an Australian journalist to pick sides.

"I'm looking forward to following not just the Danish athletes [but everyone]," Mary said diplomatically.

The journalist pressed: "Will there be a little bit of support for the Australian athletes?"

Mary replied, with a slight sigh: "Absolutely, yes...so long as they're not competing against a Dane".

In 2000, then-Crown Prince Frederik was in Australia as part of Denmark's official delegation for the Sydney Games.

It was there he met his future wife, then known as Mary Donaldson, inside the Slip Inn pub at Darling Harbour.

Mary moved to Copenhagen two years later and the couple married in a fairy tale wedding on May 14, 2004.

Twenty years on, the Games must still hold a special place in King Frederik and Queen Mary's hearts.
