Princess Diana 'wanted people to know that she loved Charles and he loved her', biographer says

Just weeks before Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed in a car crash in Paris, she told a royal biographer a detail about her life with her then-Prince Charles that she wanted the world to know.

For years, the media had followed the ups and downs of Diana's relationship with the heir to the throne, starting with their fairytale engagement and wedding in 1981 which later turned sour and ended with divorce in 1996.

But in mid-1997, the Princess of Wales was at pains to ensure the historical record would reflect the truth of their romance.

Author Ingrid Seward, who has written about the royals for 50 years, said Diana wanted the world to see the early love letters Charles wrote to her so people knew their romance had been genuine.

"Diana told me very shortly before she died that she wished people could see the love letters that she had from Charles," Seward told the Oldie magazine's literary lunch, The Times UK reports.

"She really wanted people to know that she loved Charles and he loved her.

"And I always remembered that. And she wanted the boys [Princes William and Harry] to know that," Seward said.

"There was a period of great love between them."

However, the whereabouts of these early love letters remains a mystery.

It's unclear who has them – her two sons, who were the main beneficiaries of her estate, or if they had ended up in the hands of others.

Over the years, many of Diana's private letters have come to auction often earing a hefty price.

The princess' former butler Paul Burrell has also produced a number of Diana's private notes, including some the Duke of Edinburgh had written to her.

The love letters from Charles may also have been discarded through the years.
