In another section, Harry says, "My biggest concern was history repeating itself", echoing comments he's previously made comparing media scrutiny of his wife to what his mother Princess Diana endured before her death in 1997.

"You've said some pretty shocking things here..." Oprah tells the couple as the preview concludes.

The interview was filmed at the Sussexes' home in Montecito, the same Santa Barbara neighbourhood Oprah lives in.

The interview, billed by TV network CBS as an "intimate conversation", will air on Sunday March 7 in the US.

It has been extended from 90 minutes to two hours, and was reportedly re-edited after the announcement Harry and Meghan would not be returning as senior working royals.

In a statement, CBS explained the special would begin with a "wide-ranging" conversation between Oprah and the duchess.

It will cover "everything from stepping into life as a royal, marriage, motherhood (and) philanthropic work, to how she is handling life under intense public pressure."

Harry will join the duo for the second part of the discussion, to speak about the couple's move to the US and their "future hopes and dreams for their expanding family".

According to her friend and colleague Gayle King, Oprah has declared it the "best interview" she's ever done.
