BBC won't air Meghan and Harry's interview with Oprah

The BBC won't air Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah, according to reports.

The Duchess of Sussex has recorded an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey which will air on CBS in the US on March 7.

It is understood Meghan, 39, was hoping the interview would air in the UK.

The interview is expected to be a tell-all and cover a wide range of topics including the Duchess' time as part of the royal family. It begins with Meghan and Oprah in an intimate conversation with Prince Harry joining the pair later.

The duke and duchess will be keen for Brits to watch the interview following what has been a tumultuous 12 months that has seen them resign as senior working members of the British royal family and recent confirmation they will not return in any capacity.

However the BBC, which works closely with the royal family, is reportedly reluctant to ruffle the feathers of Buckingham Palace by airing the interview, with a source telling The Telegraph in the UK: "We're not going to pull out the chequebook for that."

In fact the BBC are broadcasting a Commonwealth Day TV special with the royal family that day.

This special will feature messages from the Queen as well as Prince Charles, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge and may also be broadcast on Sky and ITV.

The BBC came famously under fire after it aired a controversial interview with Princess Diana on Panorama. During the interview Diana spoke openly about her marriage struggles with Prince Charles including their infidelities.

At the time BBC executives went to great lengths to prevent the royal family finding out about the interview before hand. As a result the broadcaster's working relationship with the BBC was impacted for some time.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex resigned as senior working members of the British Royal Family in January 2020 and relocated to the US where they have settled in California. They have signed a number of lucrative commercial deals including with Spotify and Netflix.

The couple, whose son Archie turns one on May 6, are expecting their second child due later this year.

CBS is promoting the upcoming Oprah interview through a statement which reads: "Winfrey will speak with Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, in a wide-ranging interview.

"Covering everything from stepping into life as a Royal, marriage, motherhood, philanthropic work to how she is handling life under intense public pressure.

"Later, the two are joined by Prince Harry as they speak about their move to the United States and their future hopes and dreams for their expanding family."
