Prince Harry has surprised and delighted fans with an appearance on James Corden's talk show, discussing everything from his son Archie to The Crown.

Among Harry's personal revelations were that he and wife Meghan Markle decided to resign senior working royals because the UK press was "toxic" and "destroying" his mental health.

"It was stepping back rather than stepping down. It was a very difficult environment, as a lot of people saw. We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health," he admits in the 17-minute segment.

"I was like, 'This is toxic', so I did what any husband and any father would do, I want to get my family out of here. We never walked away, and as far as I'm concerned whatever decisions are made on that side, I will never walk away.

"I will always be contributing, but my life is public service, so wherever I am in the world, it's going to be the same thing."

The proud dad also spoke about life with son Archie, who turns two in May, saying his first word was "crocodile, three syllables".

"My son is now over a year and a half, he is hysterical, he's got the most amazing personality, he's already putting two, three words together," Harry said.

The toddler, who will become a big brother later this year, also received a surprising Christmas present from his great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth.

"Interestingly, my grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas and Meg said a waffle maker, she sent us a waffle maker for Archie," Harry told Corden.

"Meg makes up a beautiful organic mix in the waffle maker, flip it, out it comes, he loves it. Archie literally wakes up in the morning and says 'waffle'."

Addressing The Crown, the hit Netflix drama focused on his family, Harry acknowledged it was "obviously fiction" but said it provided a "rough idea" of the reality of royal life.

"They don't pretend to be news ... but it gives you a rough idea of what that lifestyle, the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else, what can come from that," he said.

"I'm way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing the stories written about my family or my wife or myself. That is obviously fiction, take it how you will, but this is being reported on as fact. I have a real issue with that."
