‘Such immense loss’: William and Kate send personal message following ‘shocking’ event

Prince William and Kate have shared a personal message on social media, following the deadly flash floods in Nepal.

The Prince and Princess of Wales joined a chorus of royals who issued statements following the devastating natural disaster, but unlike many others, theirs appears to have written directly by the couple, not aides.

“The scale of the devastation along the Nepal-China border is shocking. We are thinking of everyone caught up in this terrible disaster,” they wrote in a post on X, signed off with their initials, indicating it came from the royals themselves.

“Our thoughts are especially with the families facing an unbearable wait for news and with the communities confronting such immense loss.

“We are incredibly grateful to all those working in such dangerous conditions to rescue people and support those affected.”

There are currently 33 UK nationals missing, according to the Nepal Tourism Board, two shy of the number of Australians who are missing.

King Charles said he and wife Queen Camilla were “heartbroken” by news of the inland tsunami near the Nepal-Tibet border, which hit on Wednesday after a chunk of ice fell off a glacier, sending deadly wall of water and mud through multiple communities.

“Many in the United Kingdom have strong, deep and personal ties to this part of the world,” His Majesty said.

“We send our most profound sympathy to all those who have so tragically lost their loved ones and we feel deeply for the many families awaiting anxiously the news of friends and relations.

“Our hearts go out also to the families of all the police and Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives while carrying out their courageous duty in the service of others and we give our deepest thanks to those who have responded so selflessly in undertaking rescue efforts.”

Similarly, Prince Albert of Monaco expressed his “deep sorrow regarding the terrible disaster” on behalf of himself and wife Princess Charlene.

“In these painful times, my family and the people of Monaco join me in offering our sincere condolences to the bereaved families and expressing our full solidarity with the people of Nepal and all those affected,” he said in a statement.

“We commend the dedication of the rescue teams working in particularly difficult conditions and hope that search operations will lead to the swift recovery of those still reported missing.”

Dutch royals King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima issued a joint statement also sharing their disbelief and solidarity.

“The devastating effects of the flooding in Nepal are becoming ever more apparent,” they wrote.

“Many families now find themselves mourning loved ones or anxiously waiting for more news. Our thoughts are with them, as well as with everyone involved in rescue efforts and providing assistance.”

There are more than 1300 people missing and more than 350 dead as search and rescue efforts continue across the region.
