Prince William's compassion for Kate Garraway's kids amid husband's COVID battle

UK TV presenter Kate Garraway has revealed more details about her brush with royalty late last year.

The Good Morning Britain co-host, whose husband has been in hospital battling COVID-19 since March, was filming with Prince William and Kate Middleton as they honoured the NHS as part of the Pride of Britain Awards.

The filming was socially distanced and took place before the UK's second lockdown in November but at the time the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge told the presenter they wanted to hug her for all she'd been going through on the coronavirus front herself.

"It's wonderful that they even know who I am and what I've been through," Garraway told Good Housekeeping magazine in their February cover story.

"They were so sweet to me and showed their compassion to Darcey and Billy. Because they imagined what it would be like for their own children."

"And Prince William knows exactly how hard it is to be without a parent and how it can affect you, so he shared his thoughts on that," she revealed.

Garraway's husband Derek Draper, 53, almost died multiple times since being hospitalised and placed into an induced coma, before becoming the 'UK's longest-fighting COVID-19 patient' in September.

At the time of filming with the Duke and Duchess, Garraway's daughter Darcey, 14, and son Billy, 11, had yet to see their dad since he fell ill in March.

The long-awaited reunion finally took place over the Christmas break, with the presenter updating fans on TV.

"There was a lovely moment which we did have over the period, we got to see Derek and the children did, which was the first time they were able to do that," she told co-host Ben Shephard.

"And of course it was very heightened with emotion because he has so changed. It kind of amplified how very sad it was and how different it is."

In the same interview with the magazine, the mum-of-two admitted to struggling with life as a single mum while her husband recovers.

"I honestly don't know how single mums do it; it's just so hard," Garraway told the magazine.

"A lot of the time I find myself thinking, 'What would Derek say?' and 'What would Derek do?'"

And while the TV presenter's been adjusting to her new normal with her two kids, it's been somewhat of an adjustment for William and Kate over the past 12 months as well.

The couple spent most of 2020 home-schooling their three children - Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, three.

"During lockdown, we've had to take on additional roles that others in our communities or in our lives would have helped us with," the Duchess said in a recent video call with parents.

"I've become a hairdresser this lockdown, much to my children's horror."
