Almost a year after Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with COVID-19, he remains in hospital battling the after effects of the illness.

Draper, 53, almost died multiple times and was in an induced coma for months after his organs were impacted by the virus. In September, he became the UK's longest-fighting COVID-19 patient.

"Even though we're hoping [he] can recover, it's taking a very, very long time," Garraway said on the podcast 5 Years Time, adding: "We don't know how much he can recover.

"So that's impacted on us obviously, dramatically. So, it's been really difficult."

The Good Morning Britain co-host says she is trying to remain positive after such a tough year.

"Everybody is hoping 2021 will bring just a bit of hope and relief," Garraway told hosts Darcy Aspinall and Harry Tweedy.

"The vaccine is here now, so everybody is hoping that will help COVID, I think, and help us regain some normality."

The mother-of-two, who recently announced she's writing a book about her family's experience called The Power of Hope, also told the podcast her work has been a welcome distraction and helped her cope.

"It gives you a sense of normal," she admitted.

The presenter has her breakfast TV show commitments as well as a radio hosting gig and recently spoke about the juggle of work and looking after the couple's two children — daughter Darcey, 14, and son Billy, 11.

"I honestly don't know how single mums do it; it's just so hard," Garraway said in an interview with Good Housekeeping magazine last week.

"A lot of the time I find myself thinking, 'What would Derek say?' and 'What would Derek do?'"

However, the media personality praises her friends and colleagues for helping her through.
