The $1.79 dishwashing liquid that outperformed some of the biggest supermarket brands

Australia's best supermarket dishwashing liquids have been decided by consumer group Choice, which tested 30 popular options to find which offer the best value for money.

The two brands that dominated the results are Morning Fresh and Palmolive.

The overall winner is Morning Fresh Ultimate Pro Brilliance dishwashing liquid, which took out first place with an impressive score of 90 per cent.

Coles and Woolworths sell Morning Fresh Ultimate Pro Brilliance dishwashing liquid for $6 for 350ml, so it isn't the most affordable dishwashing liquid, but it does go far.

A more budget-friendly choice is the runner up, Aldi Tandil Ultra Dry Raspberry and Apple, which scored an 85 per cent rating and costs just $1.79 for 450ml.

Two others were given a 85 per cent rating: Palmolive Ultra Gentle Care Mild Fragrance Dishwashing Liquid, which is usually $9.50 for 900mls but is on special at Woolworths this week for $6.50, and Morning Fresh Antibac Active Lemon Ultra Concentrate Dishwashing Liquid, which is $6 for 350mls.

One product Choice didn't rate highly is Ecostore Lemon Dish Liquid, which received a low 55 per cent rating.

Three additional Palmolive products were given a 80 per cent rating.

These are Palmolive Lemon Lime with Citrus Extracts Regular Dishwashing Liquid, Palmolive Ultra Mango Magic Concentrated Dishwashing Liquid, and Palmolive Ultra Strength Original Dishwashing Liquid.

Some brands didn't score well, according to the Choice experts, with some scoring less than plain water.

The lowest-rated dishwashing liquid is Ecostore Lemon Dish Liquid at 55 per cent.

Aldi Green Action Dishwashing Liquid Lemongrass and Ginger Antibacterial, Aldi Tandil Antibacterial Lemon Fights Germs, Aldi Tandil Dishwashing Liquid Lemon, Aldi Tandil Ultra Antibacterial Lemon, Coles Ultra Concentrate Dishwashing Liquid Lemon Burst, and Ecostore Ultrasensitive Dish Liquid Fragrance Free, all scored 60 per cent.

Overall, Choice's findings concluded buying based on brand alone won't guarantee good performance.

"Our tests uncovered some wild variation, so never assume that if one product cleans well, similar ones from the same brand will deliver the same results," Choice household expert Chris Barnes said.

"It's worth keeping in mind when you're shopping, otherwise you could grab an inferior product accidentally.

"Likewise, don't assume an expensive product will outperform a cheap one, our tests found price is no measure of performance."

The same goes for expecting the washing up liquid you've always used will keep giving you good results.

"The reason we test every year is because manufacturers often change the formula to improve performance or reduce costs, so check back with us each year to see which products are the best," Barnes said.

But if you "shop smart, you can find an affordable dishwashing liquid that'll give you good value for money and good performance, a win for your dishes and your pocket," he adds.
