He Said She Said: Ben Fordham reveals the wedding tradition he and wife Jodie decided to forgo

A growing number of spouses are choosing not to wear a wedding ring, despite being happily married.

While some aren't fussed about their partner's choice to forgo the traditional adornment, others suspect something more sinister.

2GB's Ben Fordham revealed he doesn't wear a wedding ring and never has.

"I cannot stand having any excess things on me," he explained to Shelly Horton on the latest episode of He Said She Said.

"I've never worn a chain, I've never worn a ring, I've never worn earrings. I don't like wearing things that I don't need to."

He said wife Jodie "respects her husband's wishes".

Fordham and Speers were married in 2011 and share three children – Freddie, eight, Pearl, six and Marigold, three.

Horton observed it is mostly men who choose not to wear a wedding ring as opposed to women.

"Because they like jewellery," Fordham suggested.

Horton spoke of the 10 years she spent dating while "between marriages", explaining she would check men's ring fingers to see if they were "available".

"But sometimes there was a tan line, so they had just taken the wedding ring off," she said.

Fordham commented that a wedding ring is "not a barrier to people cheating".

He recalled sharing a flight with a former married colleague, seeing a fellow passenger "flirting outrageously" with him despite his wedding band being clearly visible.

The colleague later told Fordham his wedding ring seemed to attract interested parties.

"If they're married and they're looking for a cheat, then they're looking for someone else with a wedding ring because then you're both in it together," Fordham recounted.

Horton feels wedding rings are a sign of "love and commitment" and for most people a sign to "stay away."

"I don't need a commitment from a jeweller to prove how much I love my wife," Fordham explained.

"In fact, when we were getting engaged I did say to Jodie, 'I've never worn any jewellery in my life and I'd prefer to keep it that way.'"

However, he did offer to wear "some kind of a ring" if she still wanted him to.

For the wedding ceremony, Fordham used his dad's ring so Speers had something to put on his finger for the ring exchange.

"Which, again, my dad never really wanted to wear either," Ben explained.

Fordham spoke about 'tradies' who won't wear rings on the job for safety reasons.

He said it is "the relationship" that is most important to the health of a marriage and not the wedding rings.
