Melania reveals Donald Trump was on a date with another woman on the night they met

Melania Trump has described meeting Donald Trump for the first time, revealing it was while he was on a date with another woman and still in the process of divorcing his second wife.

Melania, 54, shared the story in her newly released memoir Melania.

They met on a Friday evening in September 1998. Melania was invited out by a friend whose boyfriend was throwing a party at the kit Kat Klub in New York.

Despite being "tired and jetlagged", she agreed to join her. They spent the night upstairs at their table in the VIP section.

"I saw my friend wave at someone behind me," Melania recalls.

"When I turned around, I noticed a man and an attractive blonde woman approaching us."

It was Donald Trump, who was on a date with another woman.

Melania describes Donald introducing himself to her and the pair shook hands.

"I recognised the name, and I knew he was a businessman or celebrity, but not much else," she says.

When she introduced herself to him, she describes seeing his eyes "filled with curiosity and interest."

Donald sat next to her and the pair began chatting.

"It was a moment of connection, a brief encounter that left a lasting impression," she says.

Melania initially "dismissed our conversation as mere pleasantries" but admits she was "captivated by his charm and easygoing nature."

It was during a brief period when Donald's date left his side that he made his move.

"When his companion left for a moment, he asked me for my phone number," Melania writes.

"I politely declined his request. He was a little surprised."

She asked for his number instead and he gave it to you on the promise she would call him.

The businessman called over his bodyguard, who wrote his boss' number on a card for him. Donald took the card and gave it to Melania.

She called him days later, leaving a message on his machine. He returned her call that evening.

Donald called Melania again the following day, asking her out on a date, a weekend drive to his property in Bedford, New York – although she says she didn't think of it as a date. Instead, she says she thought of it as "spending time with someone intriguing."

"He told me that he was separated and in the process of divorce from his second wife, the mother of his youngest daughter," Melania writes.

"I refrained from passing any judgement, choosing instead to enjoy his company."

She noted the 24-year age difference but admits she was "giddy with joy."

"It's truly a rare feeling to instantly connect with someone on such a deep level," she writes, adding that their "chemistry was undeniable" and their connection "felt natural."

Melania says the public "only saw a part of Donald Trump."

"In private, he revealed himself as a gentleman, displaying tenderness and thoughtfulness."

One of these gestures, she says, was Donald calling her personal doctor "to check on my health to ensure that I am okay and that they are taking perfect care of me."

Donald's divorce from second wife Marla Maples was finalised in 1999. He and Melania wed in 2005 and welcomed son Barron in 2006.
